This position is responsible for providing engineering leadership of research and development efforts related to packaging design, material selection and documentation across the Andersen enterprise ensuring that our products are delivered safely and in good condition to the final customer. This role will require strong technical capabilities, project management and cross-functional team building skills. Working closely with our product design, sourcing, operations, and logistics partners this position will be responsible for developing a roadmap for the technology area, aligning on a prioritized list of short- and long-term R&D projects, driving the work needed to accomplish these projects, and leading a small group (typically 3 to 5) of engineers as direct reports. Projects for this role will include leadership and support of new product launches, cost savings opportunities, quality improvements, safety improvements along with sustainable and innovative packaging designs. (Travel 5-15%)

Job Responsibilities:

·           Serve as the lead technical engineer for packaging design and related supporting projects

·           Understand business needs and translate them into technical projects that align resources and scope to match the risk and reward of the project. Maintain alignment with business and technical teams throughout project and ultimately make recommendations regarding the viability of the developed solution.

·           Identify technical risk with new packaging designs and technologies. Outline and oversee the testing program to evaluate performance of new designs and materials, which may require working with others to create new testing methods and approaches.

·           Collaborate with cross functional partners to resource, evaluate, and ultimately commercialize new packaging designs in a large, industrial manufacturing environment.

·           Act as the technical voice of the packaging design technology development area with outside suppliers, trade organizations, industry groups, or other parties outside of Andersen Corporation.

·           Schedule, assign, direct, review, and perform project work and coordinate activities with direct reports and other engineering teams within Andersen.

·           Provide technical support for packaging related questions, technical training and/or field service questions to wide variety of groups both internal and external to Andersen Corporation.

·           Use science and engineering principles to understand packaging components and develop system level solutions

·           Develop advanced testing protocols to replicate the product distribution environment to enable faster cycles of learning and more robust packaging designs

·           Design, model, test, optimize and document packaging solutions

·           Lead packaging technology projects through a phase-gate review process demonstrating technical feasibility and making recommendations to stakeholders and technical leaders as to viability of solutions to meet business needs

·           Develop new innovative and sustainable packaging designs

·           Work closely with product design, sourcing, operations, and logistics partners to deliver cost-effective solutions that protect the product, deliver manufacturing ready processes, and enable efficient delivery

·           Assist with implementation of new designs and processes in a manufacturing environment

·           Drive improvement efforts through a solid understanding and application of modeling and statistical tools for effective solutions (i.e., FEA, DOE, Process Mapping, Pugh matrix, FMEA, THA etc.)

·           Stay abreast of industry technology developments and explore their use in Andersen products

·           Gather and translate voice of customer (internal and external) feedback into packaging requirements

·           Help define, drive, and implement packaging strategies

Minimum Qualifications:

·           BS in Mechanical/ Industrial/ Materials Science/ Packaging or similar Engineering discipline (ABET accredited program preferred)

·           5+ years engineering or technical experience working on product design, packaging, materials development, and testing

·           Project management experience and experience working with collaborative, cross functional teams

·           Experience supervising and/or leading others

·           Demonstrated predictive design skills through modeling, FEA and other advanced testing techniques

·           Experienced with 2D & 3D CAD modeling

·           Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills

·           Strong working knowledge of product development principles

·           Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Demonstrated ability to build relationships and make presentations to all levels of the organization.

·           Quick learner with a high level of ambition and collaboration

·           Strong mechanical aptitude

·           Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook) as well as statistical software (Minitab, JMP, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications:

·           MS in Mechanical/ Industrial/ Materials Science/ Packaging or similar Engineering discipline (ABET accredited program preferred)

·           7+ years engineering or technical experience working on product design, packaging, materials development, and testing

·           Demonstrated project and team leadership

·           Experience with human-centric packaging solutions

Profit Sharing:

During 2022, each eligible Andersen employee will receive $1,000 for each full fiscal quarter they are actively employed and fully vaccinated against COVID-19. An eligible employee hired during a quarter will receive a prorated payment based on the number of days employed during the quarter. Those eligible include fully-vaccinated regular full-time and part-time employees (at least 20 hours per week) who are not subject to a collective bargaining agreement.
