SUMMARY:
Andersen is seeking an experienced and innovative engineer to develop and optimize materials and processes for coatings (paints and stains), metals, and hardware across our extensive product portfolio. This role involves close collaboration with design and operations teams, focusing on coatings technology/process development and metals/hardware technology for implementation at Andersen’s manufacturing sites. Key objectives include enhancing cost efficiency, quality, and performance of product solutions.
The ideal candidate is highly motivated and passionate, with a strong technical background and a proven track record in developing, optimizing, and implementing materials and processes for various applications. Strong technical expertise, leadership skills, and the ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment are essential.
Position will be based at Andersen’s Corporate Research and Development center located in Bayport, MN.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead projects focused on coatings, metals, or hardware technology, providing recommendations to stakeholders and technical leaders on the viability of solutions to meet business needs.
- Test and validate new materials in production settings.
- Assist with the implementation of new processes in a manufacturing environment.
- Collaborate closely with suppliers to influence the development of innovative solutions.
- Design, analyze, and report on experimental studies and new technologies.
- Coordinate project activities with other engineering teams within Andersen.
- Consult with cross-functional teams and other materials teams (sealants, adhesives, glass, wood, composites).
- Stay updated on industry technology developments and explore their application in Andersen products.
- Provide technical support for coatings, metals, or hardware inquiries, technical training, and technical specification development.
- Serve as a technical contact for both internal and external manufacturing partners.
- Drive improvement efforts through the application of statistical tools and interpretation of results for effective solutions (e.g., Design of Experiments, process mapping, process capability analysis, Pugh matrix, FMEA, MSA, control plans).
- Enable the long-term success of developed solutions by defining the material specification requirements, including the process windows, design limitations, material interactions, and control plans necessary in the manufacturing environment.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:
MUST HAVE QUALIFICATIONS:
- BS Chemical/Materials Science/ or similar Engineering discipline
- Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Project management experience and experience working with collaborative, cross-functional teams
- Strong working knowledge of product development principles
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to build relationships and make presentations to all levels of the organization
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook) as well as statistical software (Minitab, JMP, etc.)
NICE-TO-HAVE QUALIFICATIONS:
- 3+ years engineering or technical experience working on coatings or metals processes, development, and/or testing
- Working knowledge of coatings, metals, or hardware and some experience with adhesives, sealants, or composites
- Experience in the fenestration or related industry
- Strong analytical skills and materials analysis experience

In 2024, Andersen has set a profit-sharing target of $4,000 per eligible employee, prorated as appropriate. Profit sharing will be paid out in quarterly installments to provide eligible employees with payments throughout the year, with payment amounts tied to quarterly operating profit performance.
